Unsika`s English Language Education Study Program; Revitalizing Curriculum

Stakeholders and lecturers of English Language Education Study Program of Unsika engaged in Focus Group Discussion on curriculum (June 11th, 2025)

Karawang, July 2025 –Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika)`s English Education Study Program has launched an initiative to review and update its undergraduate curriculum. The primary goal is to align the curriculum with university vision, national standards, and global trends in English language education. This major effort brought together stakeholders, academic experts, and faculty members through a series of focused activities.

Stakeholder Review through FGD

The process began with a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) gathering insights from lecturers, students, alumni, and graduate users. The session provided a platform to evaluate the relevance of the existing curriculum against evolving workplace demands and contemporary trends in English education. Stakeholders highlighted both strengths to maintain and areas requiring improvement, such as technology integration, English proficiency alignment with international standards, classroom management practices, and the need for stronger soft skills.

Curriculum Development Workshop with Experts

Following the FGD, the study program hosted a Curriculum Development Workshop featuring  three distinguished speakers:

  • Prof. Utami Widiati (Universitas Negeri Malang) shared strategies for crafting an innovative, flexible, and relevant English Education curriculum.
  • Prof. Ika Lestari Damayanti, Ph.D. (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia) discussed deep learning in English education and the integration of curriculum innovations at teacher training institutions.
  • Dr. Him’mawan Adi Nugroho, M.Pd. (Universitas Negeri Surabaya) explored the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum to address specific labor market demands.

This workshop served as an academic forum to translate policy, pedagogy, and industry needs into actionable curricular directions.

Program Meeting: From Vision into Course Design

Post-workshop, the study program held an internal meeting. The objective is to translate the program’s vision and mission into curriculum structure and course design. The discussions focused on harmonizing graduate profiles, Program Learning Outcomes (PLO), and systematically balancing language skills, pedagogy, linguistics, and literature components in the curriculum.

Expert Review and Refinement

Prof. Utami Widiati then thoroughly reviewed the curriculum draft, offering detailed feedback. Her input ensured the consistency with outcome-based education principles, CEFR benchmarks, and effective sequencing of skills courses. Based on these recommendations, the curriculum underwent a final revision, with meticulous attention to clear course descriptions, equitable workload distribution, and the coherence learning outcomes across all semesters.
