Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Program: FKIP UNSIKA–CSUMB Collaboration

Karawang, December 4th, 2025. The Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Program is an international academic initiative conducted through an online collaborative learning model involving students from different countries. The program was implemented through a collaboration between English Language Education Study Program (PBI) of Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika) and California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and was carried out from October to December 2025 using the Linkr platform and Zoom Meetings.

The program began with a participant selection process in both institutions. Students from PBI Unsika, were first provided with preparatory sessions before engaging with international students. These sessions focused on cultural understanding, global communication awareness, and reading comprehension strategies to support meaningful academic interaction.

The theme of the COIL Program was “Reading and Writing in the Digital World.” After completing the preparation stage, CSUMB created a shared virtual classroom on the Linkr platform, which was joined by students and lecturers from both universities. In this online classroom, students read selected academic texts and shared written reflections and ideas based on assigned readings.

The reading materials were organized around key themes related to digital life and youth culture, including social media and identity formation, adolescent body image and social comparison, youth engagement with health-related digital platforms, human–technology interaction, digital parenting, and growing up in a connected world.

After exchanging ideas asynchronously on the Linkr platform, students from UNSIKA and CSUMB met synchronously through Zoom Meetings to discuss their perspectives, compare viewpoints, and engage in cross-cultural academic dialogue based on the readings.

Through this structured COIL process, students developed academic literacy, cross-cultural communication skills, and global awareness. The program also strengthened students’ readiness to participate in international academic collaboration and prepared them to engage critically with global issues in digital literacy, education, and professional contexts.
