Guest Lecture on “Global Competence in Language Education” Conducted Successfully

 


Karawang – Thursday, 29 January 2026. The English Language Education Study Program, in collaboration with the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang, successfully conducted a Guest Lecture entitled “Global Competence in Language Education” with the subtheme “Intercultural Fluency: Navigating Language, Culture, and Identity in Global Contexts.” The activity was held online via Zoom Meeting and simultaneously livestreamed on YouTube from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (WIB).

The event commenced with an opening address delivered by Evi Karlina Ambarwati, S.S., M.Ed., Coordinator of the English Language Education Study Program. The opening session was followed by a welcoming remark from the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang, Prof. Dr. H. Sutirna, S.Pd., M.Pd.

This Guest Lecture was organized in response to the growing need for prospective language educators to possess not only strong linguistic competence but also global competence, particularly intercultural fluency. In the era of globalization, language serves as a medium of global interaction that is inseparable from cultural values, identity, and social context.

The session featured Ariq Suryo Wicaksono, a lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, as the guest speaker. He has extensive international experience, including participation in educational, youth, internship, and professional programs in various countries across Asia and Europe, such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, China, Japan, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

During his presentation, the speaker explained the concept of global competence in language education and highlighted the significance of intercultural fluency in managing cross-cultural communication in global contexts. The material was presented comprehensively by integrating theoretical perspectives with practical insights drawn from the speaker’s academic, professional, and intercultural experiences. This approach enabled participants to gain a concrete understanding of both the challenges and opportunities in international settings.

The participants, consisting of students from the English Language Education Study Program and the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, participated enthusiastically throughout the activity. The discussion and question-and-answer session proceeded actively, indicating a high level of student engagement and interest in issues related to language, culture, and identity in global contexts.

Through this activity, it is expected that students will gain conceptual and practical insights into intercultural fluency, enhance their motivation to develop global competence, and foster critical reflection on the role of language and culture in the field of education. Furthermore, this Guest Lecture represents a strategic effort to prepare students for future academic and professional opportunities at the international level.
