Karawang, February 6, 2025 – The English Education Study Program (PBI) of FKIP UNSIKA hosted a virtual International guest lecture titled "Innovative Approaches to English Language Teaching: Insight from Japan" featuring Dr. Hiroki Yamamoto, a renowned expert in English language education from Shinshu University, as the keynote speaker. During the session, Dr. Yamamoto shared his insights and experiences regarding innovative teaching methods in Japan.
As an educator with extensive experience teaching in various international settings, Dr. Yamamoto highlighted three key concepts from Japanese teaching methods that could be adapted to enhance global communication skills among students. First, he emphasized the importance of task-based assessment, which allows students to learn English through real-world applications rather than theoretical knowledge alone. This approach not only facilitates understanding the material but also sharpens students' practical English skills for everyday use.
Second, Dr. Yamamoto underscored the role of repetition in language automatization, which strengthens natural language. This technique is designed to help students respond quickly and accurately in conversations without the need to overthink sentence structures.
Third, he stressed the significance of cross-cultural understanding into language learning. In today's globalized world, a deeper appreciation of cultural differences is essential to avoid stereotypes that can impede effective communication. Dr. Yamamoto shared how language teaching in Japan not only focuses on linguistic aspects but also emphasizes enhancing cross-cultural awareness to enrich students' ability to communicate effectively and sensitively across different cultural backgrounds.
The lecture attracted over a hundred participants, including faculty members and students of PBI Unsika. Attendees engaged enthusiastically through both Zoom and YouTube Live Streaming on the PBI Unsika channel. The discussions not only enriched the participants' knowledge but also opened opportunities for applying these teaching methods in Indonesia.
